Special education can be a confusing and complicated system of acronyms and processes. This presentation covers what you need to know to prepare for, and participate in, your child’s IEP meeting. You will learn about the process for referring a child for an initial special education evaluation; how to review evaluations and prepare for the IEP/504 Plan meeting; the continuum of services; and the annual review meeting process.

Gerri Fleming, a former special education advocate, will help you make sense of the process so you’ll feel confident in advocating for your child to ensure they are receiving the appropriate supports and services in the least restrictive environment.

Materials:
Advocating for Your Child in the Special Ed Process (PDF format)
Letter from the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), a federal agency, mandating that Connecticut public schools locate, identify and evaluate all students with disabilities who may need special education and related services, regardless of the severity of their disability, and provide them with a free appropriate public education (FAPE). (PDF format)
